Parkinsons Disease
Insights into the Formation of Harmful Protein Deposits

One of the characteristics of Parkinson’s disease is that tiny threads of endogenous protein form deposits in the brain. Using a special microscopy method, researchers from Jülich and Düsseldorf were able to make direct and time-resolved observations of the formation of these alpha-synuclein fibrils for the first time. They found that fibril growth follows a "stop and go" pattern. Their findings have been published in the current issue of the Journal of Molecular Biology.
